Now that the holidays seem to be on the way, there’s been a lot of talk about the Tran-Siberian Orchestra. Someone around my house today was trying to figure out what they do and asked “don’t they just do Christmas carols..no but funky.” That’s pretty true. They combine this cool exciting style of hard rock (and classical and jazz) with some great special effects, smoke machines and light shows. It all mixes together to create a fun experience for anyone. If you have been buying their CDs over the years, you have heard their music change a little bit over the year. They have played some request nights and more playing of full albums in their concerts. This makes them seem much more friendly to people in the audience. Their album, American Idiot, has been well liked both in the US and in other countries and their newest album is also very good. It has many songs in that same vein, with songs about life in the suburbs and selling out in one’s life. They are trying to fashion themselves as “real artists”. It’s such a fun time to see what these people are writing now and their current concert tour has proven that they still connect with young listeners as they always did. Good job guys.

One of the biggest moments in the last month or so was the 90th birthday extravaganza for Pete Seeger. This is the man who made a lot of folk music what it is now, and influenced a generation or two in the world of rock and roll. One of the biggest brainchildren of Seeger is The Boss, Bruce Springsteen. He played at the birthday concert, with some striking renditions of the best songs. There were also a bunch of other musicians of that generation singing the songs. There were some younger singers too, like Dave Matthews, and it was a fitting way to honor one of the greatest musicians of the era. It was fun and energizing concert for everyone who was there!

George Strait is one of the most popular country music stars in the world. And why not? If there’s one musician who really lives the life of the country, it’s George Strait. He has his own ranch and spends lots of time on it. He first rose to prominence as a country singer in the late 80s, and eventually won several CMT and ACM awards for his work around 1990. It’s one of the deserved awards ever given, and he still performs up to that amazing standard! This is one of the major figures in country music and will play some of his most famous music. When we’re working on the musicals, we should remember that there are many musicals that remind us of the past. There have been so many different musicals and lots of them give us the basis for the kind of art that we see on Broadway theaters to this day. Now in New York, there is a show called “The Broadway Musicals of 1924″ that presents a lot of the most famous songs from musicals of that time. Remember, this is the era from before the Depression, so you can experience the feeling of that era in all its glamor. It can be one of the most fun shows in the field right now. Chris Brown is still in the throes of his conflict with Rihanna and the fallout in the media and in the industry from that problem. But the good news is that he wont have to do it alone, as Rihanna has apparently rejoined him. No one at this point is really sure about what really happened between the two of them, but none of it seems to be good. He had to go to the police the day after the event, and she has been hidden for a long time, though there were reports from the hospital that she was there. So putting the pieces together, it looks like they had a fight that turned violent, but then she decided to rejoin him. Not unusual for this kind of situation, but it’s still rather unfortunate.

When you are interested in one of the world’s most respected songwriters, Leonard Cohen is your pick. He has written many different songs that people have really enjoyed over the course of the last few decades. One of his most famous songs is “Hallelujah”, which has been performed by many different singers and has been heard on many different television programs. His songs are introspective but also very beautiful. He hasn’t performed in America in almost 15 years, having moved elsewhere for a long time. There’s a lot of discussion about that, although it’s not like that’s a big surprise. Sarah Jessica Parker has been accused of looking awful, and also of looking great, so judge for yourself. It’s always one of the biggest award shows of the year but sometimes it’s more entertaining to hear what people are saying about it.
